If there was a survey to determine the most powerful woman in Hollywood, there is no doubt Angelina Jolie would top the list. Angelina Jolie is probably the most written about actress in the world. It is not just her movies but her personal life too that has attracted a lot of attention from the media, be it her relationship with Brad Pitt or her relation with her estranged father Jon Voight, Angelina’s life has always been the centre of media attention.
Angelina grew up in Los Angeles, with dreams of becoming an actress. Both her parents were actors; her father, Jon Voight, was an Academy Award winning star while mother Marcheline Bertrand was also a successful actress. Her parents divorced and Angelina’s mother took her and her brother James to New York but later moved back to LA when Angelina was 11 years old. Angelina started early in life, she acted in her father’s film Lookin’ to Get Out (1982) when she was only a child. She knew she wanted to become an actress at a very young age. She attended the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, where she trained for two years.
She quit acting then to become a funeral director and dressed up as a Goth chick. She attended the Beverly Hills High school where she felt completely out of place. Her attempts at modeling also proved to be futile as she was rejected for one reason or another. By then, at the age of 16, she dedicated herself to acting. She landed starring roles in a few plays and impressed all that saw her perform. She had already made her debut on the big screen as a child actor but as an adult her first film was Cyborg II: Glass Shadows (1993). The movie failed, but it was a start for her film career.
Angelina’s next movie was Hackers (1995) where she met her first husband, Jonny Lee Miller. The movie again was a flop but later gained cult status when it was released on video. Her movies did not get her much attention; however, it was her personal life that became fodder for media. She married Jonny. Wearing black leather pants and a white shirt, with his name written on the back in her blood. She even admitted to using knives in bed and her fascination with death. Suddenly this two-film old actress with no hit to her credit was making headlines for all the wrong reasons. The roles started coming in thick and fast. She next starred in Playing God (1997) opposite David Duchovny and then in Mojave Moon (1997).
Whatever her personal life was, Angelina was still getting noticed for her great acting skills. After a few movies her breakthrough performance came in the biographical film George Wallace (1997). She played Cornelia Wallace, wife of the Governor who was shot and paralyzed when he was running for the presidential elections. She won praise for her role and even won the Golden Globe Award. She followed it up with another stellar performance in Gia (1998) where she played troubled supermodel Gia Carangi who died of AIDS. Again for this movie she won many awards and a star was born.
All of this established her as a competent actress and things were going great for her; career-wise, but in her personal life her marriage to Jonny Lee Miller came to an end. They divorced in 1999, but parted ways on good terms. But that same year came her best performance till date in Girl, Interrupted (1999). She played the supporting role in the movie but completely stole the show from Wynona Ryder. She won the Academy Award that year.
Angelina’s career seemed great but her personal life was still getting weirder. She married her Pushing Tin (1998) co-star Billy Bob Thornton. He was much older than her; many saw it as her attempt to have a father figure in her life as relationship with her Jon Voight was completely strained. The couple even wore vials around their necks containing of each other’s blood. It was clear this relation was not meant to last; they divorced in 2003 after three years together.
Angelina was a star but not an international one; she achieved that status by doing the Lara Croft movie. The movie was critically panned but was an international hit. It made her an international star. This was just the beginning of her stardom. She went to star in many international hits like A Mighty Heart (2007), Wanted (2008) and many more. She even has three animation movies to her credit Shark Tale (2004), Beowulf (2007) and Kungfu Panda (2008).
After her divorce from Billy Bob Angelina was single for a long time. She finally met Brad Pitt while filming Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), Brad was at the time married to Jennifer Aniston. There were rumors of the two having started an affair, but Angelina Jolie denied it. Brad separated from Jennifer and started dating Angelina. With Brad, Angelina has adopted three children from different countries; Maddox from Cambodia, Zahara from Ethiopia and Pax Thien from Vietnam and has three biological children with him. The couple has even been dubbed them as ‘Brangelina’.
