Dad's features unique flavors of ice cream

At Dad's Ice Cream, movie star images from past and present are major conversation pieces.

Plastered all over the walls are the likes of Jim Carrey, Jack Black and Jack Nicholson as well as stars of yesteryear in Gene Kelly, Judy Garland and even the King, Elvis Presley.

"People try to guess the names of all of them and test their knowledge," said Rachel Cook, store manager. "Kids and grandparents will sit for a half hour to an hour trying to get them all while they eat their ice cream."

However, the real stars in the new ice cream parlor at 3205 Union St. are the 36 flavors of ice cream chilling in Dad's freezers.

Flavors such as Raspberry Chip Cheesecake, Bear Foot Brownie and Mackinaw Island Fudge with all of the traditional flavors of ice cream have been a Hollywood blockbuster to Lafayette since the new shop opened on Aug. 19.

Dad's is an Illinois and Indiana chain that is always attached to Family Video stores. There are a handful of Dad's in Indianapolis.

District manager Brittany Mealer believes she has found a formula of flavors that thoroughly satisfied Lafayette in warmer months.

Some of the most interesting kinds include Anniversary Cake (with yellow cake batter, cake bites and frosting chunks), the nutty and fruity Blue Moon, the practically glowing-bright Play Dough with sugar cookie dough, Brownie Delite and Cherry Churros, boasting loads of cherry chunks and cinnamon-sugar tortilla chips.

With colder months coming, Mealer said new flavors will be added. On the horizon are Turtle Pecan, pumpkin, spumoni and peppermint. Out are "tropical" ice creams of Peach Pie and Pineapple Upside Cake.

Dad's also carries frozen fun for those watching their weight.

There's ice cream with no sugar and ice cream low in carbs.

Lemon and raspberry sorbet have been popular for those who don't do dairy.

The movie theme at Dad's is also found in its Blizzard-like soft serve ice cream concoctions called Reel Sensations. There's Forrest Gump (chocolate and brownie), Rocky (chocolate chunks and nuts), Sleepless in Seattle (cappuccino and cocoa) and Twister (M&M's, fudge, caramel and cookie dough).

Other frozen treats include sundaes, smoothies and granitas, which are similar to slushies.

Ice cream cakes are created in-house and are made of actual cake and scooped ice cream.

Mealer said the goal of Dad's is to make it feel like a mom and pop soda shop with a swirl of Hollywood mixed in. So far, Lafayette has given the parlor favorable reviews as Cook and Mealer already have a cast of regular customers who have their tried and true favorites.

"We start scooping as soon as they pull up to the door," Mealer said.
