Maria Sharapova in Moscow for First Time Since Emigrating 11 Years...

Russian tennis star Maria Sharapova set foot in Moscow for the second time in her life when she arrived Saturday a week ahead of the Kremlin Cup tournament, the Moskovsky Komsomolets daily reported.

Siberian-born Maria first visited Russia’s capital at the age of seven as she and her father drove through the city to the airport to catch a plane to the U.S. She has now returned as the world’s top player, still accompanied by her father and coach Yuri Sharapov.

“Oh yes, I am at home, I have really longed to come here,” the Florida-based Maria was quoted by Moskovsky Komsomolets as saying.

“I can still remember leaving Sheremetyevo airport 11 years ago. We did not know where were going then, at all. Did not know what would come of it… And here I am back in Moscow, the world’s number one, it is so amazing!”

Sharapova arrived a week ahead of the Kremlin Cup tournament, to see some of the city and have some treatment for her injured chest muscle that recently forced her to pull out of the China Open tournament and could prevent her from performing in Moscow, too. However, she sounded cheerful and said she was looking forward to playing and the fans.

“I am feeling better now, I have had some really good rest. I am really looking forward to playing at home — this is going to be my first time,” Maria said.

“I hope I will have time to see everything here,” she added.
