Students paper rooms with posters of model Brooke Burke and John Belushi

September 20, 2005

Gun-touting Irishmen, 17th century pirates, Civil War-era lovers, Italy, Paris.

For most, the previous items appear to be a completely random assortment of people and places. For Ohio University sophomores Emily Grantham and Caroline Glynn, however, there is a perfectly reasonable connection between them - each is figured prominently on one of the many posters that adorn their room in their residence hall.

Some posters are from popular movies - "The Boondock Saints" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl." Others are from classics - "Gone with the Wind" and "My Fair Lady." Others depict the beautiful landscapes of Italy and Paris.

Grantham and Glynn aren't the only ones in Read Hall with eclectic tastes. Just down the hall, freshmen Matt Witham and Tyler McCormick display a diverse collection of their own - "Family Guy," model Brooke Burke and the oh-so-classic picture of John Belushi wearing his "COLLEGE" shirt from the movie "Animal House."

In the world of college residence halls and houses, posters are more than just random wall filler; they are a personal representation of the students who live in them and the broader college culture as a whole.

Grantham, for example, proudly displays her Italian heritage, love for movies - both modern and classic - and fancy for the strapping men of "Pirates of the Caribbean" in her collection.

For her, posters are a way of defining who she is as an individual.

"I didn't want the same thing as everyone else," she said.

Witham, on the other hand, wasn't afraid to embrace the broader college culture as a whole. He described his Belushi poster as a "staple of the college dorm room." He was sure to mention that he was also a fan of "Animal House" in its own right, also.

AllPosters.com, one of the largest online poster stores, according to the Web site, lists that same "Animal House" poster as one of the most popular out of 28,507 that constitute its "college" collection. Other popular selections include scenes from the 1994 Quentin Tarantino hit, "Pulp Fiction," 2003's "Old School" and a picture of the classic 1970s rock band Led Zeppelin.

Classic rock posters always sell well, said Diane Davis, a vendor for Prolific Art Galleries, which ran its annual back-to-school poster sale in Baker University Center's 1954 Lounge last week.

Other consistent top sellers over the past few years have been posters with pictures of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Bob Marley, she said.

Hot sellers this year include "Sex and the City," Jessica Simpson's "Rolling Stone" cover, "Sin City" and "Fight Club," Davis said.
