McCartney (Jesse, not Paul) brings his ‘Beautiful Soul’ to the fair

Oct. 07, 2005

Jesse McCartney? He's the cute blond guy staring out from a thousand teen magazines ("Does JESSE have a girlfriend? Oh, no!"). He's also all over the radio and MTV ("She's No You," "Beautiful Soul") and TV (a star of the WB drama "Summerland").

At 18 McCartney also is a veteran of "All My Children" — he snared Emmy nods when he was 12 and 13 — and boy band Dream Street.

Along with the Oak Ridge Boys, Mario, Darryl Worley and others, McCartney is one of the featured performers at this year's S.C. State Fair. He closes the fair Oct. 16.

We tried to get the It Boy on the phone but had to settle for an e-mail interview. Jesse's "mom-ager," Ginger, said he answered our questions and she typed:

Should we refer to you as J-Mac?

Nah, just Jesse.

What did you have for breakfast today?

I had Starbucks and an English muffin with cream cheese on it.

Where did you grow up? Where do you live now? You just bought a house?

I grew up in Westchester (County), N.Y., a half-hour north of Manhattan. I live in L.A., and, yes, my family and I bought a house in L.A. since I'm going to be here for a while, I figure.

You just graduated from high school? Where/what school?

The same town I grew up in — (Irvington, in) lower Westchester.

Did you actually go to school? How'd you fit that in with being a pop star and TV star?

I did go to school regularly through my junior year. I'd take five weeks off every now and then to go out on the road or work in a show. My senior year, "Summerland" kept me in L.A. full time so I had a tutor take my school's curriculum and teach me the same things my classes were studying back in New York. So I was able to graduate with my hometown class this year.

What class were you best in? Worst in?

Gym and then there was gym. Social studies was the worst.

Any college plans? What are you going to do with your life, young man?

I'm not going to college this year but plan to sometime in the future. I will finish out my recording contract and hopefully do some film work before returning to school.

In the Fourth of July special taped at Ford's Theatre in Washington, I understand you dedicated "She's No You" to first lady Laura Bush. Are you a fan of hers?

I think she is a beautiful, poised lady, and she contributes her time to the board of the Ford's Theatre. So in my book, she's OK.

It's hard to believe that "Summerland" was canceled. Do you think you should have worn your wet suit more often or maybe taken off your shirt?

Many days it was freezing on the beach when we were working, so, yes! I'd have liked to have worn my wet suit more often. As far as taking off my shirt — I'm a skinny white boy from New York. No.

Your song "Beautiful Soul": Do you think teenage guys everywhere are using the title as a pickup line to girls ("I'm really in love with your beautiful soul")?

I doubt it. Ha-ha.

You co-wrote several songs on your debut CD. Is one especially meaningful to you?

I like "She's No You," the second single, because it was one of the very first songs I had a hand in, and I just liked it a lot.

OK, I know you get this a lot: You're not related to Paul McCartney, are you? But I understand you perform Beatles songs.

I love the Beatles' music. No, I'm not related, but one day Sir Paul and I will probably meet. I sing "Blackbird" and "Here, There and Everywhere."

With all these adoring female fans, does it P.O. other guys? Do jealous guys ever try to kick your butt?

I'm not too popular with the "boyfriends." They try to give me a hard time. I try not to get in their face to avoid conflicts, 'cause sometimes their girlfriends are cute!
