Robert De Niro's maid, Turyk Wawrynowicz, remained in jail

12th of October 2005, 10:11

using forged documents, Robert De Niro's maid, Turyk Wawrynowicz, remained in jail.

The defendant lawyer, Rae Koshetz, denounced the decision as "punitive". "If she were going to run away, she would have done so already," he said.

The 10 people who put up $75,000 for the maid's bail after she was indicted in June can have their money back, the judge said.
The Polish native housekeeper was accused of stealing a pair of diamond earrings, estimated at $95,000, a $1,000 pair of shoes and $500 belt belonging to Robert De Niro’s wife, Grace Hightower.

The maid is also accused of having stolen jewelry, worth several thousand dollars, from Renee Rockefeller, the New York socialite and wife of Mark Rockefeller, in December 2003.

She was also indicted on identity theft charges for using two Social Security numbers and two resident alien work card numbers. One of them belonged to a 13-year-old girl. The housekeeper had been using the child's social security number since 2000, when the child was 8.

The judge found that the evidence presented was sufficient to justify the indictments.
