Salma Hayek Bets on Betty La Fea

October 14, 2005

Salma Hayek will work with producer Ben Silverman to bring the Colombian TeleNovela Betty La Fea to American audiences.

If American audiences can develop a taste for Hong Kong action films and Bollywood musicals from India…why not TeleNovelas? Daily Variety reports Salma Hayek and Ben Silverman are attempting to translate Betty La Fea into English…actually American…and put it on ABC.

Betty comes from Colombia's RCN Networks, and it's one of the religiously followed high-octane Latina soap operas that are incredibly popular South of the U.S. Border, and, increasingly, North of that line as well. The exact translation of the title is Ugly Betty, and it concerns a strikingly unattractive secretary who falls in love with her very handsome boss…the head of a fashion design company. Writer Silvio Horta is set to head up the writing staff for the series.

Silverman has been trying to get Betty to ugly up U.S. TV for four years and almost got it going on NBC. The TeleNovela has all the standard soap opera elements, plus, the developers promise, a strong dose of comedy as well.
