Nobody bumbled quite as handsomely as Cary Grant.
October 22, 2005
Cary Grant was a handsome leading man – that's a given. But he also had a flair for bumbling comedy, and Arsenic and Old Lace, Frank Capra's witty adaptation of the stage play, is one of the best showcases for it.
Grant plays straight man and fool to a couple of murderous old maids: Josephine Hull and Jean Adair reprising their Broadway roles. Watching his face change as he gradually discovers what the spinsters are up to is worth the price of admission.
Horror and humor rarely have been so winning together, thanks to Capra's light touch. The film airs at 7 tonight on Turner Classic Movies.
