X-Play: Morgan Webb Interview

March 18th, 2004

By receiving the majority of 150,000 votes, TechTV's Morgan Webb recently ran away with Playboy.com's "Girls of TechTV" poll. A co-host on TechTV's video gaming show, X-Play, Morgan shares her gaming enthusiasm and thoughts with viewers. We decided we'd take a shot at getting to know a little more about this "Gamer Girl" and what she has to say about her position with TechTV and her thoughts on the gaming industry in this exclusive interview.

Tell us a bit about your role with TechTV and X-Play and how that position came about.

Morgan Webb: When I first started working at TechTV, I was an associate producer for The Screen Savers, I then started doing On-Air computer help and windows tips. My interest in games allowed me to try out for X-Play when they were looking for a new gamer girl.

Did you ever dream that a youth spent without cable would lead you to where you're at today? How do friends and family react to the fact that you get to play videogames for a living?

Morgan Webb: I don't exactly play video games for a living. It would be nice if that were true, but we all spend a lot of time engaged in the business of television production. Sometimes we get so busy we don't even have time to play the games ourselves, and delegate that task to the interns. We play as much as possible though, and if I get bored at work it is a nice to be able to pick from a huge library of games, put my feet up, and shoot some aliens without being accused of slacking.

What do you find to be the best perk about your job?

Morgan Webb: See above. Some people have to turn to solitaire to get their gaming fix during work. I turn to Ninja Gaiden.

Who would you say has been the most exciting person you have met in your position and why?

Morgan Webb: I once met a man dressed up as Sonic the Hedgehog. He was pretty cute and very squishy. To this day I wonder if he was properly scotch-guarded. Perhaps I'll never know.

Do you find yourself labeled as a "Gamer Girl?" If so, what do you think about the title?

Morgan Webb: I am a gamer and I am a girl. I find it descriptive.

You've mentioned that a major accomplishment early in your gaming years was surpassing your older brother in skill. How did that affect you, and him for that matter?

Morgan Webb: I don't know if, when we were young, I ever truly surpassed him in skill. There was something about his being 2 years older that made him better at everything. Being competitive, I was definitely able to hold my own against him, and win with respectable frequency in some titles. At this point, when the difference in our ages is negligible, I can kick his ass (sorry bro).

There is one exception though, the original Zelda. I brought the Zelda compilation disk home the other day, and he could still play it with his eyes closed and one hand tied behind his back. He remembered where every burnable bush was, every heart container, every cave. I was utterly dumbfounded. I remembered some of them, but I was very impressed with his recollection.
