Ricky Martin Blasts Child Sex Tourism

21 October 2004

Ricky Martin is calling on United Nations diplomats to help bring an end to the growing problem of child sex tourism. The Puerto Rican heart-throb addressed a luncheon of Latin American diplomats yesterday on the issue, which he insists needs to be ended immediately. He says, "This is slavery and this is the year 2004 and we are still dealing with it. There is a lot of denial. I want to see abolition of this slavery. I need to see the world step out of denial and see this happening here." While the cause is also a favorite of US President George W Bush, Martin denies it has anything to do with the November 2 presidential elections. He adds, "It is not tied to anyone's campaign. I am here to talk on behalf of the children. I need your help." Martin, 32, heads a foundation called People For Children, which funds projects aimed at eliminating child trafficking and exploitation.
