CNN, FNC Slug It Out

26 March 2002

CNN anchor Aaron Brown has sprung off the ropes swinging after taking a pasting at the hands of rival Fox News Channel's Greta Van Susteren on March 12. Van Susteren's smack in the ratings fight came when she interviewed Tonya Harding about her guest appearance on the Fox TV network's Celebrity Boxing. Speaking with Philadelphia Inquirer TV columnist Gail Shister, Brown maintained that he did not mind losing because Van Susteren's program that night was "stupid." "If I'm going to lose, I want to lose to stupid." As for his own program, he said, "We're not doing sharks. We're not [hyping] Celebrity Boxing. ... The truth is, Greta's show is not a news program. It's a talk show about the news. ... With Tonya, I thought, 'OK, I get it. It's cheap ratings stuff, and it's not what I want to do with my life.'" An FNC spokeswoman shot back: "Coming from a self-described news anchor that has on wine tasters and hypes Liza Minnelli's wedding, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. He seems to have become a legend in his own mind."
