The French sports newspaper L'Equipe reported Wednesday that Argentina's Mariano Puerta tested positive for a banned stimulant following his loss to Rafael Nadal in the French Open final and could be banned from tennis for life.
The International Tennis Federation, which oversees drug testing at Grand Slam events, has declined comment.
Phone calls to Puerta's hotel room in Tokyo on Wednesday went unanswered. Charles Russell, a British law firm representing Puerta, said the player "did not deliberately or knowingly ingest any prohibited substance" and he "strenuously denies that a doping offense has been committed."
Playing at the hard-court Japan Open, Puerta defeated U.S. qualifier Eric Taino 6-3, 6-4 in the second round Wednesday, when rain led to postponements and a backlog of matches.

Anna Kournikova was named to be the fourth player at Virginia Commonwealth's Siegel Center in Richmond on Dec. 2 for a big-time exhibition called the Genworth Children's Advantage Classic.
At 7:30 that night, Andre Agassi and his wife, Steffi Graf, will play Kournikova and Andy Roddick in a pro-set to eight games, followed by a best-of-three-sets match between Agassi and Roddick.
"She'll sell tickets," said Buzz Richmond, Genworth's senior vice president for brand marketing, said of Kournikova.
Tickets from $25 to $150 are on sale at the VCU box office (804-828-7267) and Ticketmaster outlets. Proceeds will benefit at-risk children academically and athletically.
