Laney high reaps rewards from famous Alum

Wilmington's Laney High School has long basked in the reflected glory of its most famous alumnus. Now the school is getting something more tangible from its connection to Michael Jordan -- money.

Laney has a new contract with Nike to sell replicas of Jordan's high school jersey and other retro gear. The school gets seven percent of the net sales. The first check came in June for three months' worth of sales. It was for $112,000 -- the amount Laney spends each year on instructional supplies.

Laney principal Bob Grimes says he never expected that much money, and it's very welcome. The school had to scrap plans for a new gym due to lack of money from New Hanover County. Now it will use some of the Nike proceeds to refurbish the existing gym. Other uses for the money are still being worked out.
