Spending her youth mental anguished by the tragically early death of her comedian father Richard, at the age of 31 only. Kate Beckinsale has made of herself a bright and accomplished woman. A prize-winning author and poet, and Oxford-educated, she broke through as Flora Poste in a BBC adaptation of Cold Comfort Farm before rising to leading lady status in the likes of Pearl Harbour and Serendipity.

Clearly talented from a young age, she won first prizes in several young writing competitions. After finishing school in London, she gradually began acting, thus following in the footsteps of her parents. In 1991 she played a role in a television film about World War II, through which she became widely known by the British public. The film was also broadcast in America at the end of that year. Beckinsale then began studying German, French and Russian at New College, Oxford University, though she did not complete her studies. In interviews she commented that she felt the university background would be better for her than attending a school of performing arts.

Kate Beckinsale was England's #1 Beauty in 2002 selected by Hello Magazine.

Acting on the stage consumed the first part of 1995; she toured in England with the Thelma Holts Theatre Company production of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull. After turning down several mediocre scripts, "and going nearly berserk with boredom", she waited seven months before another interesting role was offered to her. Her big movie of 1995 was the romance/horror movie Haunted (1995), starring opposite Aidan Quinn and John Gielgud, and filmed in West Sussex.
