Richard Gere News

Richard Gere is the perfect example of how to use one’s celebrity status for good causes. In the last decade or so, Richard has been in the news more for charity work and social causes. He has been a practicing Buddhist for a very long time. He had embraced the religion when he had gone to Nepal with a girlfriend of his. He embraced the religion and has been promoting it in America ever since.

Richard is the only Hollywood actor who has been banned from entering The Republic of China. He has been very vocal about his support to the independent nation of Tibet. Not just that, he is also the Chairman of the International Campaign for Tibet. He is also very close to the Dalai Lama. Richard has co-founded two charity organizations; The Tibet House and The Gere Foundation.

He often visits India, doing his charity work and campaigns mostly about AIDS awareness. Sadly, he got involved in some controversy after an AIDS campaign event, where he kissed Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, winner of celebrity Big Brother in UK. He kissed her to show that AIDS does not spread through kissing, but the political parties, and media made an issue out of it.

Richard started his career in acting very late. He was two years into college, when he decided to quit and started doing theatre. He found early success in theatre and was soon cast in his very first film. Although, the role was small, Richard made his debut in Baby Blue Marine (1976). He gained a lot of fame from his lead act in American Gigolo (1980). And he followed it up with the super romantic An Officer and a Gentleman (1982). He was even nominated for a Golden Globe Award, but did not win it. He won the Golden Globe for his performance in the film version of Chicago (2002). It was nice to see him play the bad guy with such ease.

His other notable performances are in the films Internal Affairs (1990), Primal Fear (1996) and The Jackal (1997). One of his biggest successes was the film Pretty Woman (1990). He formed a great pair with Julia Roberts, and the two are considered one of the best on-screen couples. Fans were dying for a sequel to Pretty Woman, but they had to wait for many years before the two came back together on-screen. They did the film Runaway Bride (1999). Julia played a bride who has a habit of running away from her wedding; Richard played a reporter, who writes a report on her but is made to apologize to her, and in the process he falls in love with her. As expected, the fans thronged to see the film and the pair had worked their magic again.

In 1991, Richard married supermodel Cindy Crawford. Unfortunately, their marriage did not last and they got divorced in 1995. Richard then met actress Carey Lowell, and the pair got married in 2002; they even have son together, Homer James Gere, named after Richard’s father.
