For further studies Salma moved to Mexico City, where she studied International Relations as a university student, but, to the chagrin of her family, decided to drop out in order to pursue acting.

, was fairly successful. In 1999, she starred with Will Smith and Kevin Kline in Barry Sonnenfeld's "Wild Wild West" which was her biggest film up to date, but the film made disappointment.
In 2000, Hayek could be seen in smaller, edgier ventures, including the independent comedy "Chain of Fools" and Mike Figgis' experimental "Time Code". While 2001 comes with "In the Time of the Butterflies" (2001) and "Hotel" (2001).
