    - Salma Hayek

And this has happened to me ever since I was a girl, when I was flat, had no teeth, was skinny and small as I could be. I always got more attention than anyone else. If I hadn't, I would have made sure I did."

    - Salma Hayek

  4. "People say we're all identical, but Jennifer Lopez is an American. She's from New York. She doesn't have an accent. Some of these Latin people - their Spanish is pathetic. They learned it when they became famous as Latinos."
    - Salma Hayek

  5. "When I first came to Hollywood I was told to go out with an agent because it was good for my career. So I went to a party with him because it was good for my 'career.' Well, he thought the whole thing was a big date. Needless to say, I was very upset."

Her success is very important because she represents a different culture, but it doesn't help me. I grew up in Mexico, not the US, and the fact is that there just aren't any parts for Latin actresses. I have to persuade people that my accent won't be a problem, but an asset."
    - Salma Hayek

  9. "I always wanted to be an actress ever since I was a little girl, but later I tried to convince myself that's not what I wanted. That I wanted to settle down with a stable career. That's what everybody else was doing, and it's what my parents expected of me. So, I tried to put that part of me away. but, I couldn't fool myself."
    - Salma Hayek

  10. "When I finally decided to leave school and pursue acting, my parents didn't take it very lightly. My friends thought that it was the tackiest thing they'd ever heard of. Acting was really beneath them. They couldn't believe that I would want to become an actress. Not now, of course."
    - Salma Hayek

  11. "You know how macho boys get when they're all together? Well, the set of Desperado was like that. They were all trying to put me down, saying, 'Bring on the stuntwoman, Salma can't do that.' But I did everything. The scene where Antonio and I jump across two buildings was great. They put cables on us and it really was like flying. I didn't want to stop. I kept saying, 'Can we do it one more time?' I had a blast..."
    - Salma Hayek

  12. "I'm a sucker for talent. I think it's the sexiest thing in the world. I'd like them to have a sense of adventure and fun. Loyalty, obviously. And some sense of humor. But I don't like the really funny ones. You always have to laugh at the jokes. It makes me nervous."
    - Salma Hayek

  13. "It breaks my heart because there are some parts I know I would have the right spirit for, and I just don't get them because I have an accent."
    - Salma Hayek

  14. "When I'm doing a movie, that's when I relax. As stressful as it can be, as much pressure as it should be, making movies is still the place where I feel the most at ease and I truly enjoy it. That's why I make so many."
    - Salma Hayek

  15. "Life is tough, and if you have the ability to laugh at it you have the ability to enjoy it."
    - Salma Hayek

  16. On becoming Frida:
One day, I went to Kahlo's house in Mexico City, which is a museum now, and I just became enamored with this character. Then when I came to the United States, when I first moved here, I heard they were doing a movie about Frida Kahlo, and I was so excited, but I didn't speak English. I didn't have an agent. So, I started trying to find people who would put me in contact with the people who were doing the casting.

  17. On why it's not easy being green:
I was completely naïve. I had, like, a student visa, and I said, 'So, what are the best agencies?' And they said, 'William Morris, CAA and ICM.' I went, 'Okay, which one's closer to my house?' They said, 'William Morris.' Okay. So, I dialed 411. 'Hello? Yeah, can I have William Morris' number?' They gave me the number. I called. 'Hello?' I said, 'May I talk to Mr. Morris, please?' They said, 'He's dead.' And they hung up the phone.

  18. On getting Ashley Judd for Frida:
I called her up, and I was really nervous. It was a little bit embarrassing...And then she was about to hang up...and I said, 'Um, Ashley, remember that movie? I don't know if you'll remember that movie I've always wanted to do about Frida Kahlo.' She said, 'Of course, I remember it. That's all you talk about.' I went, 'Well, do you know who Tina Modotti is?' And she said, 'No.' I said, 'Well, she was this photographer...' Ashley said, 'Salma?' And I thought she was gonna say, 'I really have to go now.' But she said, 'The answer is yes.' I went, 'But you don't know what I'm gonna ask.' And she said, 'It doesn't matter. Whatever it is, the answer is yes.'

  19. On getting a little help from her boyfriend:
[Edward Norton] did all the latest drafts on Frida. He's the one who worked all the latest drafts as soon as [director Julie Taymor] came on board. It was just so amazing that we got along so well, because by then there was no more money for another writer. And Edward jumped in and said, 'Okay, I'll save the day.' But Julie had to approve the writer...and Julie had complete confidence in Edward, and they communicated wonderfully, which it was just so lucky.

  20. On why she doesn't want to be called a Latina:
When you come here, it...it's like an alien thing. Not an alien, but you don't feel they're talking about you...I'm Mexican. And the concept of Latina, it's a weird one, because if you think, What's Latino? Latino is the people that speak Latin languages.

  21. On why she didn't become Selena:
I didn't really know who she [the popular Tejano singer slain in 1995] was...And it was so soon after her death, I didn't find it appropriate...However, I think Jennifer [Lopez, who starred in the 1997 biopic Selena] did a fantastic job. And I think she was absolutely right for the part...wonderful in it. Frida is something that was truly my passion, and I always wanted to make it. And you also don't want to do 10 biographies about every famous Latin woman. You have to choose what you want to do.

  22. On Edward Norton (sort of):
It's so private that I can't even tell why we choose to be private...It is a completely different area of life that doesn't need to be on camera. Otherwise, you're exploiting the most intimate, meaningful things about yourself. It's ours; it's not anybody else's. But it's a good thing. I'll tell you that much.
