Family
Shania Twain born on 28th August,1965 in Windsor, Ontario to Sharon and Clarence Edwards, she was born Eilleen Regina Edwards but later renamed as Shania Twain. She grew up as Eilleen Twain of Irish and Native Canadian extraction in Timmins, Ontario, after her parents separated when she was two, and her mother later remarried to Jerry Twain.

Early Career
When she was in her teens she had a job at McDonalds after school, she worked on her dads reforestation business, before her musical career began, she planted trees with her stepfather as part of a forest crew.

At the age of 13, Eileen Twain was invited to perform on CBC television's "Tommy Hunter Show". During high school in Timmins, she was the vocalist for a local band, which covered Top 40 music. At the age of 16 she played in her first band. A band named Longshot, "We were pretty good actually, pretty dangerous for my home town and pretty popular." (FHM 1998). When she was 22, her parents were killed in an accident and she became the legal guardian of her two half brothers and sister, putting her musical career on hold to care for them.

She moved them to Hunstville Ontario with siblings. The aspiring singer took a job at the Canadian Deerhurst resort in northern Ontario. Shania was the lead performer in a variety of musical productions at Deerhurst. She looks back on this as good experience and a learning period, like going to music school, which she never had a chance to do. She concentrated on country music, and dazzled the crowds night after night which is an Ojibwa language word meaning "I'm on my way". The city of Timmins later renamed a street for her and built the "Shania Twain Museum".

Demo Tape with Mercury Nashville Records
She assembled a demo tape of her songs, and her manager set up a showcase concert in Canada. Twain caught the attention of a few insiders with the concert, and within a few months, Mercury Nashville had signed her to their roster. They invited her to Nashville to cut a demo. She moved to Nashville. In 1991, she signed her first recording contract with Mercury Nashville Records with songwriter and producer Norro Wilson and Buddy Cannon. Her song, "God Ain't Gonna Get You For That", was the only part composed by Shania, but definitely pointed the way to the future. At that time she changed her name to Shania Twain.

Shania Twain and Mutt Lange
But this demo tape gather attention from a certain South African record producer and now her husband called Mutt Lange. Then living in England, he would watch CMT Europe for the latest releases. One day he happened to see Shania's video for 'What made you say that?' and immediately wanted to know more. A friend in Nashville sent him Shania's CD. He contacted Mary Bailey in the hope of getting to speak to Shania and in return was sent a signed photo. He didn't give up however, and soon he and Shania were talking on the phone on a regular basis and sharing song ideas. They finally met at fan fair June 1993 and already were best friends. Over the next few months they wrote songs together whenever they could and eventually they found that they had fallen in love, on December 28th 1993 they were married. The next six years went like a whirlwind, two hugely successful albums, co-written and produced by her husband Robert John Mutt lange (The Woman In Me and Come On Over) and a high profile, highly successful world tour.

"The Woman in Me"
Her album The Woman in Me was very successful its singles like "Any Man of Mine" and "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?" was hit. It eventually topped the country charts for months and became a massive crossover on the mainstream charts, peaking at No. 5 and topping out at 12 million sold. The Woman in Me went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Country Album as well as the Academy of Country Music award for Album of the Year; the latter group also awarded Twain as Best New Female Vocalist.

"Come On Over"
In 1997, Come On Over was released. The album was first seen as a disappointment over the last The Woman in Me. But slowly, the album started racking up sales peaking at No. 2 and selling 172,000 out of the country. She toured the globe in support of the album. Come on Over had sold 20 million copies in America and 39 million worldwide, making it the biggest album by a female artist in history. Over the next two years, the album stayed on the charts, spinning off hit after hit. Songs from the album won four Grammy Awards over the next two years, including Best Country Song for Twain and Lange for "You're Still the One" and "Come on Over" and Best Female Country Performance for "You're Still the One" and "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!".

"Up!"
After having a child in 2001 (son Eja) and also after a very long time after Come on Over (1997) Up! was released in November of 2002. She toured again to support it. A double-album, it featured 19 songs in pop mixes and the same 19 songs in country mixes. Internationally the country mixes were replaced by world mixes. Up! debuted at No. 1 to good reviews, selling 874,000 in the first week alone. It charted at the top for five weeks. Despite hit singles like "Gonna Getcha Good", "Up!" and "Forever and for Always", Up! didn't have the staying power of Come on Over. It sold 5 million in America. Since it was a double album, it has been certified 10 × Platinum.

"Greatest Hits Album"
In 2004, she released a greatest hits album. It quickly sold 2 million copies in the United States in just a month and a half.

She was voted the sexiest vegetarian alive by a PETA award in 2000. In 1999 Twain also established a visible commercial relationship with Revlon cosmetics, based around "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!".

In 1998 Shania Twain launched her first major concert tour, aided by her manager Jon Landau, a veteran of many large-scale tours with Bruce Springsteen. The shows were enthusiastically received by audiences around the globe and answered critics who speculated that she could not perform live. Twain's peak of success was further emphasized when she was named the 1999 Entertainer of the Year by both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association.

Twain currently lives in Switzerland with Lange and their son Eja; she states that living so far away gives her the privacy she would otherwise lack. As an alternate retreat, she has also recently purchased Motutapu Station near Wanaka in New Zealand, a 17,000 Ha sheep station where she hopes to build a house.

She is currently working on her next studio album, which is scheduled for release in 2006. On August 28, 2005, she celebrated her 40th birthday. In August 2005, she released the single "(Men Are Like) Shoes" from the Desperate Housewives soundtrack.

A television biopic of Twain, Shania: A Life in Eight Albums, is scheduled to air on CBC Television on November 7, 2005, with Meredith Henderson starring as Twain.
